HI THERE! I’m Emily.
Let me tell you a bit about myself and about my #metas! I’ve been in Austin since I was 12 years old- over half of my life. I graduated from Westlake High School in 2010 and moved on to The University of Texas where I studied Spanish Linguistics and graduated as a proud Longhorn in 2014. I couldn’t stay away from UT for long, so I went back and participated in the esteemed UTeach Liberal Arts Program to fulfill my lifelong dream of being in the classroom. I am now a Spanish teacher at Hill Country Middle School where I once walked the halls as a proud Cougar student! It is a blessing to still be part of the wonderful Eanes community.
Although Austin is my home now, my roots run deep in El Paso, Texas where I was born to Lebanese and Syrian families. My family has always been multilingual and multicultural. I grew up in households that spoke 3 different languages! English, Arabic and Spanish. Arabic, of course, was part of our rich Middle Eastern culture. Spanish, however, was an integral part of our every day lives living on the Texas-Mexico border. Not to mention that my paternal grandparents immigrated from the Old Country to the United States through South America and Mexico.
I grew up with traditional values that focused on family, hard work, and integrity. But perhaps the most important value instilled in me by my maternal grandfather was the importance of education. He would always tell me to go after my education and "study hard." My grandfather would always say, “Your education will never leave you…when life gets hard and you have nothing else, you will always have it.”
My grandfather’s words and lifelong counseling are something that I have always cherished greatly and have kept close to my heart. Both my love for academia and passion for languages and culture are what push me today. I strive to instill the values of hard work and integrity in my students. More importantly, however, is that I want my students to believe in themselves and their abilities. They are incredibly smart and capable and I want them to leave their time with me with the confidence to know that they can achieve whatever goals they set their minds to, whether they be academic goals or personal goals. #metas is about growth and self-efficacy. It’s about having the belief that your goals can be achieved and then working hard to obtain the skills and knowledge required to realize those goals. I want to empower my students in this way and help them navigate through these critical times in their lives so they can see themselves at the end of the finish line achieving their #metas.
